Arabic proverbs:The manners and customs of the modern Egyptians

[Arabic+Proverbs+the+Manners+and+Customs+of+the+Modern+Egyptians.jpg]

Arabic proverbs; or, The manners and customs of the modern Egyptians

al3arabiya info

Many of the proverbial sayings translated in this volume, were collected by Sheref ed chjn Ihn Asacl, a native of Cairo, who lived, it is said, early in the last century, but never acquired
a very high literary reputation. The translator found those Proverbs written upon nme or ten leaves in the common-place book of a sheikh, mth whom he was acquainted in this city ; but they wanted explanation or commentary. Of those he has omitted a considerable number, many being altogether uninteresting, and others so grossly indehcate that he could, not venture to lay them before the ubhc, although it must be acknowledged that they excelled in wit. Several sayings which appear to have been popular in the time of Ibn Asad, are no longer current ; and these the translator has marked with an asterisk.

This Vocabulary has been compiled primarily for the use of British Officers and Oflicials serving in the Anglo-Eoyptian Sudan, but it is hoped that it may also prove of some use to visitors
to the Sudan, or to those interested in the various dialects of the Arabic language.

It consists of two distinct elements : —

1. The technical terms in use in the Egyptian Army and in the various Departments of the Sudan Government.

2. Some 3,500 words of the most common daily usage, translated into the Arabic equivalents emploj'ed for tliese in conversation among the Arabs of the Anglo- Egyptian Sudan.

An Arabic-English vocabulary of the colloquial Arabic of Egypt

قامـــوس اللــهـجة العامــية المـصرية -عربي إنجـلـيـزي - سقــراط سبـيـرو
An Arabic English Dictionary of The Colloquial Arabic of Egypt

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SYandHDvpd4/SpPwyIpSBfI/AAAAAAAAA0g/EwZBenDA0HA/s400/info.jpg

An Arabic-English vocabulary of the colloquial Arabic of Egypt, containing the vernacular idioms and expressions, slang phrases, etc., etc., used by the native Egyptians

Perhaps no apology is needed for introducing the present work to the notice of oriental scholars in general and Arabic scholars in particular. Having been interested for many years in the colloquial Arabic of Egypt, the compiler was struck - as, no doubt, all those who have studied colloquial Arabic must also have been-by the wealth of the dialect, not only in words but in forms of expression and subtle meanings, and the more he studied the subject, the more he
became convinced of the necessity and utility of a vocabulary to introduce the foreigner to the still uncomprehended treasures of colloquial Arabic.

Arabic reading lessons: consisting of extracts from the Koran, and other sources, grammatically analysed and translated; with the elements of Arabic grammar

al3arabiya info
It will be observed that this little Work is properly divided into three Parts. The first is an Elementary Grammar ; the second, an Analytical Eeading Book ; and the third, Grammatical Exercises.

The beginner is recommended to acquaint himself with the first eleven sections of the Grammar, taking particular care first to obtain a thorough knowledge of the powers of the letters. He should then commit the regular conjugations to memory. A moderate acquaintance with
the Grammar, thus far, will enable the learner to proceed with the Analysis. But here he cannot too carefully attend to the references made to the first portion of the Work. By an adherence to this plan of study, he will easily attain sufficient knowledge to enable him to avail himself, with ease, of works which treat upon the Arabic language more...

The new edition has been called for by the publisher in view of the continued demand for the Grammar both in Europe and in Egypt since the first became exhausted six months ago. A complete alphabetical list of the words used in the Exercises on the Accidence has been inserted, and an Appendix containing a few additional grammatical notes ; and the work has been generally revised. A Key to the Exercises, including the Stories, has been published separately.

Manual of Palestinian Arabic, for self-instruction

Manual of Palestinian Arabic, for self-instruction

Manual of Palestinian Arabic, for self-instruction

al3arabiya info

The present volume has grown out of a need — which I have abundant reason to suppose that others as well as myself have experienced — for some means of acquiring a knowledge of the Arabic dialect spoken, not only in Jerusalem, but with some slight variations, in the whole of Palestine, to-day.

Such manuals as already exist in English are, for the most part, adapted for the Egyptian Arabic, or for the Libanese such as is spoken in Beirut and in the north, or for other special districts,
and may be misleading, especially in nomenclature, to such as have learnt no Arabic whatever; and confusing to those who, like myself, when I came into this part of the country six years ago, are students of the classical language only. Such manuals, moreover, contain many words which occur only in modern, literary Arabic, and which, as not belonging to the vernacular and not understood by the populace, have, in this volume, been carefully excluded.

I have sought to adapt this work to the Arabic student interested in the dialect as such, as well as to those requiring the language for daily use iu Palestine ; also to the passing traveller seeking to make himself understood, and to understand those about him. In these days of multiplication of railways, hotels, and other conveniences of travel, when the often obtrusive dragoman is
happily becoming less of a necessity, the demand for a practical phrase-book is increasingly urgent. The necessary limits of such a Manual obviously preclude the possibility of presenting a Grammar which is exhaustive, even in regard to the vernacular; it is however hoped that it may be found to include all that is necessary for such practical use as has been suggested.

The Latin script has been used throughout, in order to give the precise pronounciation, each word being transliterated as uttered in the vernacular, regardless of its form in literary Arabic from which there are many deviations, especially in the s sounds. The literary

ELEMENTARY+ARABIC+a+series+planned+by+FREDERIC+DU+PRE+THORNTON

ELEMENTARY ARABIC a series planned by FREDERIC DU PRE THORNTON

[info.jpg]
ELEMENTARY ARABIC a series planned by FREDERIC DU PRE THORNTON. Lecturer in Persian in the University of Cambridge, and some time Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge at the University Press 1909 . PREFACE THIS Reading 7 Book is the second of three which were planned by the late Mr Thornton for his Arabic Series. The first, published in 1907, contains certain extracts from the Koran, a portion pp. 13 64 of Wrights Arabic Reading-Book, a grammatical analysis of the Koranic text, and a glossary the third, which I hope to bring out next year, will comprise the remainder of Wrights work, a glossary, and brief explanatory notes. The present volume is marked by some novel features. 1. The selected passages are taken from texts and many scripts which, so far as I know, have not hitherto been edited by any European scholar. 2. They have been chosen and arranged in chronological order with the purpose of illustrating the literary, social, and religious history of the Arabs. 3. Notes have been added at the foot of each page, partly to explain grammatical and linguistic difficulties, and partly to supply such literary and historical information as is indispensable. I will now state the various sources from which I have derived the nineteen extracts included in this book. I. The manners, customs, and beliefs of the Pre-Islamic Arabs. This passage is taken from the Mustatraf, an extensive anthology compiled by Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khatib al- Abshihi, who died about 1450 A. D., and comprises the greater part of the fifty-ninth chapter Bulaq edition, 1268 A. H., vol. ii. pp. 9599. VI PREFACE II. The war of Dahis and al Ghabra. This account of one of the most famous Pre-islamic wars occurs in the iqdal farid by Ibn abdi rabbihi of Cordova, who died in 940 A. D. Cairo edition, 1293A. H., vol. iii. p. 67, 1. 21 to p. 68, 1. 27. III. Arab knights. Also from the iqd vol. i, p. 44, 1. 11 to p. 45, last line. IV. Concerning poetry and poets. This passage consists of extracts from the forty-ninth section of the Muzhir ft uldm al lughaft, a well-known treatise on philology, by Jalal al din al Suytiti, who died in 1505 A. D. Bulaq edition, 1282 A. H., vol. ii. pp. 234245. V. Specimens of Arabian eloquence, wit, and wisdom. These are selected from the Kitdb al baydn wal tabai yun, a very interesting work on rhetoric by amr ibn Bahr al Jahiz, who died in 869 A. D. Cairo edition, 1313 A. H., vol. i. p. 175, 1. 5 to p. 192, 1. 14. VI. Early Moslem asceticism. Extracts from the same work, vol. ii. p. 86, 1. 9 to p. 91, 1. 22. VII. The meaning and derivation of Sufi. Two extracts from the Risdltih, al Qushai riyafi an important treatise on early Muharnmadan mysticism, by Abu 1 Qasim al Qushairi of Nishapur, who died in 1072 A. D. Cairo edition, 1318 A. H., p. 9, 11. 310, and p. 149, 11. 2435. VIII. Stories of Moslem saints. These are taken from the Leiden manuscript of the Hilytih al auliyd Cod. 311 Warn. by Abu Nuaim al Isfahan, who died in 1038 A. D. See the Leiden Catalogue, vol. v. p. 209. The anecdotes of Ibrahim ibn Adham occur in vol. i. f. 182 b and foil., while the story of Dhu 1 Nun al Misri comes in vol. ii. f. 205 a and foil. PREFACE Vll IX. The Shuubiyah and their opponents. Two extracts from the iqd al arid of Tbn abdi rabbihi, vol. ii. p. 85, 1. 19 to p. 86, 1. 21 and p. 90, 1. 11 to p. 91, 1. 17. X. The Mutaziliyah. Two extracts from the KaMttl, a popular anthology com piled byBaha al din al Amili, who died in 1621 A. D. Bulaq edition, 1288 A. H., p. 159, 11. 1421, and p. 219, 1. 18 to p. 220, 1. 7. XI Some Arab orators. This passage occurs in the Zahr al dddb by Abu Ishaq Ibrahim al Husri of Qairawan in North Africa, who died in 1022 or 1061 A. D. His anthology lias been printed on the margins of the iqd al farid Cairo edition, 1293A. H.. The passage in question will be found in vol. iii. p. 200, 1. 19 to p. 204, 1. 8...
