l'arabe, et assurément, il n'y a pas de peuple qui plus que les Arabes s'en serve dans la vie de tous les jours. Seulement, pour les connaître, il ne faut pas s'adresser à la classe instruite qui a trouvé dans les livres la philosophie , les apophtegmes et les hikam que le vulgaire ne possède que par ses proverbes et ses dictons à lui. J'ai observé , au moins en Orient , que plus on s'est plongé dans l'étude des livres , moins on sait de proverbes , j'entends parler de ceux qui font l'objet de cette publication. On les dédaigne même, et si l'on s'en sert, c'est sous un habitus grammatical que le peuple ignore.
