Sibawayh on ?imalah (Inclination). Text, Translation, Notes and Analysis

al3arabiya.info

Professor Sara's rigorous and innovative work, with its "rich translation format", gets to the inner depths of the text and immediately helps the reader realize that Sibawayh and his contemporaries were in fact operating, not within any Western or Eastern paradigms, but rather within their own paradigm of Arabic linguistics. It is a very welcome and long-awaited contribution to the fields of Arabic language and linguistics, history of Arabic grammatical tradition, and history and historiography of linguistics. -- Mohammad T. Alhawary, Professor of Arabic Language, University of Oklahoma An important contribution to the subject of phonology in Classical Arabic Linguistics, this book deals with the treatise of the Imalah by the founder of Arabic linguistics, Sibawayh, who is also a great grammarian and the creator of the most comprehensive systematic description of classical Arabic grammar. This translation by Professor Sara is faithful and his analyses are masterfully accurate. The book makes a significant contribution to Arabic linguistics in general and to phonetics and phonology of the language in particular.

Social Issues in Popular Yemeni Culture

Social Issues in Popular Yemeni Culture قضايا اجتماعية في الادب الشعبي اليمني

Social Issues in Popular Yemeni Culture قضايا اجتماعية في الادب الشعبي اليمني

al3arabiya.info
Since February 2002, English translations by Janet Watson of episodes from a popular Yemeni radio series called Mus’id wa Mus’ida, written and produced by Abd al-Rahman Mutahhar since 1988, have been published in the Yemen Times. This book contains fifty such episodes, each of which takes the form of a spirited, often acrimonious dialogue between husband (Mus’id) and wife (Mus’ida); and each is illustrated with a drawing by the Yemeni cartoonist Muhammad al-Shaibani, whose work appears in the daily newspaper al- Thawra and enjoys great popularity.

Brought together in this book, therefore, are two forms of contemporary Yemeni art which address social issues through satire to raise public awareness and promote a wider sense of social responsibility. Most of the issues covered have a bearing on the position and treatment of women and children, health, marriage, family planning, pollution and the environment.

Janet Watson, who has expert knowledge of colloquial Yemeni Arabic, in particular the Sana’ani dialect, has translated the fifty episodes into vernacular English. The result will benefit Yemeni students of English, just as the original Arabic text, with its pithy proverbs and apposite quotations from the Quran, will benefit and entertain the foreign student of Arabic. But the value of the book goes beyond linguistics. It offers many insights into the attitudes of a traditional Muslim society seeking to adjust to the pressures of modern development; so there is much here to enlighten, as well as entertain, the non- Yemeni reader.

Spoken Libyan Arabic

al3arabiya.info
The aim of this book is to aid the student possessing a background in Modern Standard Arabic to comprehend the spoken Libyan dialect, or, more precisely, the two main urban dialects, that of Tripoli in the west and Benghazi in the East. The two speakers in the dialogues are from Tripoli and from the countryside surrounding Benghazi. A special aspect of the thirty selections in the book is that they are the spontaneous speech of ordinary informants and that they have been edited on for the sake of length. The selections are transcribed into a modified version of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Selections are accompanied by a vocabulary and notes, and there is a global glossary at the end of the book. An English tranlation of each selection is also provided.

Levantine Arabic for Non-Natives : A Proficiency-Oriented Approach
[ Transliteration Only ]

al3arabiya.info
This textbook is for beginning students of Arabic who are seeking to develop communicative oral skills in colloquial Levantine Arabic , the dialect used in Jerusalem and in contemporary Syria , Lebanon , Jordan , and Palestine/Israel . It is the first textbook for colloquial Arabic developed according to the principles of the proficiency movement in foreign language teaching , in which the emphasis is placed on the use of meaningful drills , activities that are appropiate to the context in which the language will be spoken , and a balance between linguistic accuracy , and active use of the language . The first half of the teacher's manual is devoted to a series of "functions" that focus on specific spoken activities , such as greetings , identifying objects , or asking for information . Each function is accompanied by explication , classroom activities , and sugestions for other activities both in and out of the classroom . The second part provides a series of ten situations in which passages in the colloquial dialect , mostly in the form of narratives , are intended to take the students beyond the level of basic communications to a more descriptive and narrative mode . The text is accompanied by charts and glossaries . A set of audio tapes is keyed to the individual functions and situations . The second part of the teacher's manual is available as a separate book for student use . Levantine Arabic may be used as the 'Primary text' for a course designed exclusively to teach colloquial Arabic , or in conjunction with beginning and intermediate courses in Modern Standard Arabic .
I would love to see some nice person post the audio tapes accompanying this .... if not , I will try to do this myself gradually . Once again , thanks to the original uploader .
